Commercial Bank of Ceylon, together with Visa, celebrated a major milestone in Sri Lanka’s digital payments journey by surpassing 100,000 Google Pay transactions within just six weeks of the service’s launch for Visa cardholders. The achievement was commemorated at an event held recently at Cinnamon Life.
The milestone highlights the rapid adoption of secure, contactless mobile payments in Sri Lanka and reflects growing consumer confidence in cashless payment solutions. Commercial Bank noted that the success represents a significant step forward in the evolution of digital payments, driven by the combined strengths of Commercial Bank, Visa, and Google in delivering a seamless, secure, and globally connected payment experience.
As the first bank in Sri Lanka to partner with Google and Visa to enable Google Pay, Commercial Bank has provided its customers with early access to a globally trusted mobile payment platform. This first-mover advantage allows users to benefit from convenience, speed, and enhanced security backed by Visa’s global network and advanced tokenisation technology.
The landmark 100,000th transaction was completed by Mr. S. Uddeeptha Gajasinghe, who was invited to the celebration and presented with a commemorative plaque and gift vouchers in recognition of the occasion.
Commercial Bank stated that the milestone reflects the successful integration of Google’s intuitive user experience, Visa’s secure payment infrastructure, and the Bank’s robust digital banking ecosystem. Together, these elements signal a confident step toward shaping the future of cashless payments and accelerating Sri Lanka’s transition to a digital economy.
